The Outreach
Council found many ways to address peace and justice issues
in 2006! Many requests for financial support or
involvement came in and were prioritized by a very involved
group of participants. Listed below are the high
points.
We continued support for
Presbyterian Community Center with volunteers for Kids Cafe
every third Tuesday--and regular council representation from
CHPC by Izzy Jones and Chris Snyder. Outreach had one
council meeting at PCC and again provided a $500 donation to
the Center.
United Crescent Hill Community
Ministries (UCHM) is a continuing ministry with active
involvement by a number of individuals, including our own
Pastor Jane. This organization, like PCC, has
ministries to seniors and youth. They were presented
with 60% of the 40% of the Pentecost Offering that stayed
with Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church. In addition,
there is a regular $4000 commitment from our Outreach
budget.
Habitat for Humanity again
built a house with regular monthly active participation from
CHPC members. This worthy organization received a $500
donation from Outreach.
Garden Camp at CHPC (June 5-30)
is now a regular, annual ministry in good living, earth
stewardship and learning to be with each for children.
This year Garden Camp received 40% of the $40% of the
Pentecost Offering that stayed with the church. This
was in addition to personal donations from congregation
members, of course!
Once again we have supported
the Malawi Shallow Wells Project. We asked the
congregation to provide the $300 needed for one well--and
were overwhelmed by learning that we had enough money to
provide four wells!
Last year the Peruvian Crafts
sale with products provided through our own mission worker
in Peru, Ruth Farrell, was a huge success. In 2006 we
decided to opt for a larger box and collaborated with James
Lees Presbyterian Church on the purchase and sale of items.
Mission co-workers Shannon
Langley, Dorothy Hanson and the Boyds were invited to share
reports on their work with the congregation. Outreach
continued to work to be supportive of our mission co-workers
with regular communication and Christmas cards.
Another mission project we
supported was the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) in
their CIW 2006 Truth Tour to Chicago. We helped pay
for their stay at Urban Spirit here in Louisville. We
also contributed $500 toward the building of their new
Community Center for workers in Immokalee, Florida.
We were asked to host a showing
of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" in the Fireside Room.
There was a good turnout of interested viewers--who also
enjoyed the popcorn. This was followed by a discussion
of what we as individuals could do and ample supportive
handouts.
