Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church
“Westminster Ways”
September 2010
Dear Friends,
Maybe it’s because my father was a
school superintendent, maybe it’s because much of my
life I was a student or have had children who were
students or have been married to a teacher, but this
time of year always brings great anticipation and
excitement. And even though, as a preacher, I think of
my life – and the life of this congregation –more in
terms of the Christian liturgical year, the school
calendar still helps frame a good part of our life
together. Especially our learning life. We are all,
after all, still students. So, even those of us not
returning to school like we once did, still can sense
the anticipation and excitement of the chance to
continue to learn and grow.
In addition to getting back into
the ritual of attending worship regularly, I want to
encourage and challenge you to find at least one other
way to engage in the life of the church, a class or
project or group that will encourage your own growth and
learning. Included in this month’s Westminster Ways
are many such opportunities: Sunday school classes,
fellowship groups for all ages, choir, a new young adult
group offering, Spirituality Saturdays, the Guatemala
Task Force, Spanish classes. Read this newsletter with
the “ear of your heart” – noticing if there’s something
that catches your interest, tugs at your soul. If you
need more information about any particular thing, please
talk to the contact person – or to me. Or, if you don’t
see what your heart seems to need right now, talk to me
about that. Maybe there are others with a common
interest and we’ll help you get together.
After a summer of comings and
goings, I’m eager to be back to the regularity of our
life together – and to seeing some of you who also have
been coming and going. Hopefully you’ll be coming to
church – to worship and to learn!
Hopefully,
Jane Larsen-Wigger
P.S. A huge thank you to all of
you – for recognizing and celebrating my 10th
anniversary as your pastor, but mostly for being a
congregation that has been a great joy to serve with for
10 years! I am extremely grateful for it all. Your
generosity and graciousness is humbling.

Homebound Communion
If you are unable to be at worship
and would like to receive Homebound Communion this
month, please call the church office (893-5381).
Canned Goods for UCHM
We are collecting canned food (like
tuna or peanut butter) for United Crescent Hill
Ministries (UCHM) emergency food assistance program on
the first Sunday of each month. Collection baskets will
be in the Gathering Room. Thank you for this on-going
help to neighbors in need.
Children and Worship
Children are a welcome and important part of our
worshiping community. However, the following
opportunities are also available for younger children:
The Nursery is for children ages 3
and younger. It is located downstairs in the sanctuary
building at the end of the hall. One paid attendant
(Mary Harris) and one volunteer staff the nursery.
Please ask ushers for directions.
Joyful Noise provides activities
for children (ages 4 through second grade) during part
of the worship service. After the Litany of Parting,
children ages 4 through second grade can leave the
sanctuary with Marcus Perry and a volunteer for Joyful
Noise activities and return after the sermon.
A basket in the narthex holds books, paper, and crayons
for children to use in the sanctuary during worship.
Children entering third grade will
receive Bibles during worship on Sunday, September 12.
They will then be able to use their Bible during worship
and participate in worship.
If you would like resources to help
your child learn more about the worship service or have
ideas of how we can involve children more fully in
worship, please contact Jane or the church office
(893-5381 or office@crescenthill.org).
Volunteers are always needed in the
Nursery and with Joyful Noise. Please contact Marcus
Perry (272-0131 or
louisvillejuggler@yahoo.com)
if you are willing to help out with Joyful Noise and
Patti Marcum (office@crescenthill.org
or 893-5381) if you can serve in the Nursery.
As with all our volunteers with
children, it is necessary to have a background check on
file in the church office. Contact the church office to
request the background check.

the Sunday School breakfast on September 12. If you
can’t make that but want to know more, please talk to
Jane Larsen-Wigger.

There will be a choral workshop on

Food for Thought

going to share with us his first hand account of
conditions and issues facing North Korea today.
Spirituality Saturdays
Please give some thought to joining
others on for morning prayer, conversation about the
spiritual life, and artistic expressions of prayer. If
you think you might be interested, you can purchase and

us on Saturday, September 25.
CHPC Presbyterian
Women
A new program year will
begin for CHPC Presbyterian Women on Tuesday, September
14th, at 10:00
am in the
Fireside Room. Come and join our circle for fellowship,
prayer, mission efforts, and Bible study. This year’s
Bible study will be “Journeys Through Revelation:
Apocalyptic Hope for Today.” It will lead to
thought-provoking discussions. Hope to see you on
September 14th.
Gena’s Tree
Gena’s Tree blossomed beautifully
during its first season with school supplies, backpacks,
and uniforms. United Crescent Hill Ministries received
most of the offerings, with a few notebooks going to
Bellewood. Indeed, Miss Gena would have been pleased.
Stay tuned for word about the next growing season………
For more information, contact Diana Stephen, 896-6075.
Attention All Knitters and
Crocheters
If you’re looking for a project,
consider making winter hats or scarves or gloves or
socks or whatever for children of all ages for this
upcoming winter season. Or you may want to make a
prayer shawl for someone who will feel God’s embracing
love through it. If you need yarn or knitting needles,
you’ll find some in the narthex. If you need
instructions, Patti Marcum can provide them. If you’d
like to learn to knit or crochet, let Patti know and
someone will be available to guide you. For more
information, contact Patti Marcum at 893-5381.
Engaging Spirituality
This year, Crescent Hill
Presbyterian Church will be offering the program
Engaging Spirituality for "young adults" in the
congregation. This program presents a spiritual
deepening process that invites small groups to explore
the intersection between contemplative presence and
social action. It will meet for 21 weeks beginning in
October. If you self-identify as a "young adult" and are
interested in learning more, please contact Christine
Coy Fohr at christine@justfaith.org.

Moment for Mission
During the month of August,
Crescent Hill Presbyterian had the wonderful opportunity
to hear from Christi and Jeff Boyd and Amanda Craft, two
of the missionaries that our church supports. Listening
to these individuals speak of their work in Cameroon and
in Guatemala, one is struck by the impact these devoted
Christians are making in these impoverished nations, and
by the challenges they face on a daily basis. And while
our church’s financial assistance is critical in
supporting the work that is accomplished by the Boyds
and Amanda, our prayers are also vital for their
continued success. What should we be praying for? The
needs of our mission co-workers are similar to our
everyday concerns, but are acerbated due to the
conditions of their calling:
·
Family Relationships:
Living far from family places an emotional burden on
mission coworkers as they deal with the anxiety of aging
parents, sick siblings, and/or children in another
country.
·
Safety in travel:
Travel in poorer countries is fraught with obstacles and
safety concerns, including danger from road conditions
and marauders, drug traffickers, etc.
·
Success in outreach and work:
Language, societal expectations, cultural differences,
etc. are all areas which can impact the work of a
mission co worker.
·
Political and Societal Change:
Social mores can impede the rate of progress in
initiating new approaches to old problems, and political
unrest can suffocate the opportunity for change.
As you pray for your own needs each
day, please ask for the good Lord to be with our
church’s missionaries both in the challenges of everyday
life and in the added factors of serving overseas.
While our financial support is very
appreciated and necessary in assisting our mission
co-workers in their undertaking, our prayers for them is
also vitally needed.

Thank You
I want to thank you, CHPC, for your
kind gift of $528.40 from your Pentecost offering to
Bellewood. Our mission of changing lives and building
futures for abused, neglected and homeless young people
in Kentucky would not be possible without your support.
We know that we could not continue
to provide our services without the prayers, concern,
interest and support of Crescent Hill. At your request,
the generosity you’ve bestowed will go toward an
educational outing for the 10 boys we care for in our
Transitional Living program.
Warm regards,
