“Westminster Ways”

February 2012

Dear Friends,

By the time you read this I will be somewhere in Israel or Palestine.  I have the privilege of co-leading (with former CHPCer Trisha Tull) a Holy Land Pilgrimage for pastors.  This journey is intended to be more than just a trip and different from a study tour.   A pilgrimage is more like an extended spiritual retreat.  While in the company of others who are also seeking to be faithful disciples of Christ, and in the geography where Jesus walked and preached, we will have opportunity to reflect on our own journeys of faith and ministry.  As someone has explained:  “Pilgrimage rightly done is a kind of divine reading of sacred places.”

As you may suspect, landscape and geography are something that are a deep part of my own spiritual life.  Having been born and raised on the Kansas plains instilled in me a strong spiritual sense of place.  On my first visit to the Holy Land (in 2009 as a participant on this same pilgrimage) it was this sense of geography that spoke to me most deeply.  To have the sense of the plains where Jesus walked, the eerie vastness of the wilderness where he retreated, and the arduous trek it must have been ‘up’ to Jerusalem and Bethlehem, were all things that I ‘read’ with my soul as well as my eyes and mind.

One of my own hopes for this particular pilgrimage, besides the benefits for the pastors who are on this as well as myself, is to be able to return with nuggets to share with you from this time of “divine reading.”   During Lent this year I hope to invite you into a similar sort of “reading” of the sacred places where you find yourself on your own spiritual pilgrimage that is life.  The devotional guide that you will find in your copy of Presbyterians Today will offer you daily guidance for such a pilgrimage.  During worship each week we will reflect together on how we walk with God in the places where we live and work.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 22.  Please plan to be with us in the sanctuary to begin our journey together.  And in the meantime, may “the Lord keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.”*

Grace and Peace,

Jane

Taize Service of Healing and Peace February 15, 2012

Our next Taize Service of Healing and Peace will be Wednesday, February 15, at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary.  The services will be held every other month during 2012 on the third Wednesday of the month.

Everyone is welcome.  We believe you will find solace at these services – a time of silence, song and prayer.  Scripture, Words of Confession and Assurance, and Prayers of Intercession are encircled by beautiful songs lead by a cantor.  At the end of the service, those who choose to come forward can receive either or both blessings:  The Anointing of Oil (the sign of the cross on the forehead) and The Laying on of Hands (at this time you can offer a specific prayer request if you choose.)

Childcare will be provided.  Any questions or concerns, please address them to the Worship Committee via email to the church office (office@ crescenthill.org).

Ash Wednesday

February 22, 2012

Lent is a forty-day period of prayer and preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter.  Lent begins with Ash Wednesday when foreheads of Christians are marked with ashes as a reminder that we were created from dust and will return to dust.  CHPC’s Ash Wednesday Service will be Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary.  All are welcome.

Friendship Ministry

The Friendship Ministry is in need of volunteers to reach out the people of our church.  These volunteers work with the deacon of the month in offering assistance to individuals and families who are experiencing illness or hospitalization, loss or distress. Primarily, you are asked to deliver a meal or call to see how they are doing.  If you would be available to help with this vital ministry within our church, please contact the church office (office@crescenthill.org or 893-5381)

From Debbie Dierks

Some of you have asked me why there has been no organ music during worship.  “Is the organ broken?”

Actually, I’m a little broken.  Late last summer, I fell and ruptured a disc in my lower back, and to work the pedals is quite painful.  I’m looking at different options of treatment, and will get back to the organ as soon as possible.

In the meantime, enjoy the beauty of the other instruments of praise, especially our incredible piano and the talented musicians in our congregation who freely and joyfully make a joyful noise to the Lord.

Gena’s Tree

Warm clothing will continue to be the “blooms” for Gena’s Tree during February and March that will be given to the Coalition for the Homeless, Wayside’s Center for Women and Children, and LaCasita.  Many thanks to all who have helped Gena’s Tree bloom during these winter months.  Each agency has expressed their appreciation for the clothing and the knitted hats and scarves that are so lovely!

Souperbowl of Caring

On Sunday February 5, 140 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game.  There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter and a warm meal.  Please join young people around the country as they demonstrate God's love by loving their neighbors through the SouperBowl of Caring.  It's a simple, yet significant act of caring for others: Drop $1 (or more) or one non-perishable food item (or more) in the soup pot as you leave worship on February 5.   Donations will support the United Crescent Hill Ministries food pantry. Checks may be made out to CHPC with SouperBowl in memo line.

Annual Interfaith Coffee

The Temple has invited us to attend their annual interfaith coffee on Monday, February 6, beginning at 9:30 am.  This year’s program will be on the Jewish Roots of Social Justice, led by Rabbis Joe Rooks Rapport, Gaylia R. Rooks, and David Ariel-Joel.  A number of us from CHPC plan to attend.  If you’d like to be part of our group, contact Diana Stephen at 502-896-6075 or dasky@bellsouth.net.

Women’s Spirituality Group

The Women’s Spirituality Group will be meeting again on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the home of Dana Butz.  The evening includes a brief worshipful experience, discussion around a book of spirituality, and time for laughter, prayer, sharing and fun!   On Tuesday, February 7, we will begin discussing The Artist’s Rule, by Christine Paintner.  Please contact Laura Sullivan at lalalouie@gmail.com for more information about the study of this book.  Contact Dana at 339-8903 if you need directions.

February Food for Thought

February's Food for Thought will be a soup and bread lunch after worship on Sunday, February 12. Our speaker for that day is Sarah Lynn Cunningham, director of Louisville Climate Action Network. She will talk with us about climate change and how we can help reduce its impacts. Please plan to join us!

Sisters of Sarah Book Group News

This book group meets the second Sunday of the month at 4:00 pm.  On February 12, Julie Leake will host the book discussion on The Ungarnished Truth: Memoirs of a Pillsbury Bake off Contest Winner by Ellie Mathew.  Julie’s address is 3804 Elmwood Avenue.  All are welcome.  For more information, contact Carla McMillin at cjmcmillin@insightbb.com or 896-6503.

I Love Mountains Day

A number of folks from CHPC have participated in the past in I Love Mountains Day in Frankfort. This year's celebration will be on Valentine's Day, Tuesday February 14. It will begin with folks gathering on the front steps of the Capitol at noon. At 12:30 we will march around the Capitol and past the Governor's mansion. Make a pinwheel (or two or three or more) to place on the Governor's lawn. We hope to have 60,000 pinwheels on the lawn to represent the 60,000 additional cancer cases in people who live near mountain top removal mining sites.

If you plan to go, please register at http://www. kftc.org/take-action/ilm-2012 so that we'll know how many people are coming from Jefferson County. If needed, you can request carpooling information when you register. Also, Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light is chartering buses again this year to take folks to the rally. Go to http://www.kentuckyipl.org/ILoveMtns.html if you want to ride the bus.

All-Church Games Night

Everyone (all ages) is invited to join us on Sunday, February 26, for All-Church Games Night.  We will meet in the back building from 4:00-6:00 pm for fun, fellowship, and food.  Bring $3.00 for pizza.

Spring is Coming…So is the PW Spring Gathering

This year’s PW Spring Gathering to be held on Saturday, March 24, at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church.  Kate Thomas, this year’s speaker, is the author of New Every Morning, Grandparenting a Child with Autism, and Mother Duck Knows the Way.

The gathering will begin at 9:00 am with fellowship and coffee.  At 10:00 am the program will begin followed by lunch which will cost $8.00.  The offering taken during worship will go to Springhaven, a domestic abuse shelter for women and children in Elizabethtown.

Interested in attending?  Contact Diana Stephen at 502-896-6075 or dasky@bellsouth.net. Reservations are required.  Some of us plan to carpool to Elizabethtown, so come and join us.

2012 Pledges

If you pledged money to both the annual budget and BetterSpace in 2012, it would be very helpful to the church treasurer if you would write separate checks for each father than combining both on one check.  Pledged amounts to both the annual budget and BetterSpace should be made out to CHPC.  However, for pledges to BetterSpace, please put BetterSpace or Building in the memo line.  This will make balancing the weekly deposit much easier.  Thank you.

E-mailing Westminster Ways

In order to lower costs and save paper, CHPC will no longer be sending its monthly newsletter, Westminster Ways, through the U.S. Post Office.  You may receive Westminster Ways one of four ways:

1. The newsletter is available on our CHPC website (www.crescenthill.org). Click on “Members” and then “Westminster Ways.”

2. The church office will email a copy of Westminster Ways to your email address if you are receiving CHPC group emails.  (If you are not receiving CHPC group emails and would like to do so, please contact the church office at 893-5381 or office@crescenthill.org.)

3. Some hard copies of Westminster Ways will be printed and placed in the narthex if you would like to pick up a hard copy.

4. If you do not have access to email and are unable to pick up a copy at church, you can ask the church office to mail you a copy.

Calling all cooks

Do you like to cook? Do you want to support CHPC youth?  Middle and high school youth gather every week for activities on Sunday from 4:00-6:00 pm, ending with a shared meal.  Twice a month, elementary aged children join us as well. Graciously, parents divide up and team up to provide dinner for the group (average between 18-35 people).  Meals vary from pasta to taco bars, chili to sandwiches.  We could use a few volunteers to help parents provide the meal.   Even if you do not have children in elementary, middle, or high school, we would love to have your help in the kitchen and join us around the tables to get to know this wonderful bunch better.  Currently we need volunteers to work WITH another family on the following evenings:  March 4, March 11, April 15, and May 6.  If you would like help cook, please contact Kate Husk, 608-5299 or kate@ianhusk.com.

Children’s Fellowship

All children in grades 2-5 and their parents are invited to Children’s Fellowship on the second Sunday of each month (February 12) from 4:00-6:00 pm for music, games, and activities. We’ll begin and end in Fellowship Hall.

And don’t forget All-Church Games Night on Sunday, February 26, from 4:00-6:00 pm in Fellowship Hall.  Join us for games, fun, and pizza.  Please bring $3.00 for pizza.
