CHPC Crescent Hill PC
Westminster Ways
May 2008

Dear Friends,

Greetings from your caring, compassionate Deacons!

On April 6, we gathered to honor past and present monthly coordinators of the Friendship Ministry (formerly called the Friendship Book) and to discuss ways we might refine the process.  As we had hoped, some valuable ideas came from the conversations at the luncheon.  Our agenda is two-fold:  First, we want to do our best to see that anyone and everyone in time of need feels the love and support of the CHPC community.  Second, we want to help everyone in the CHPC community find a way to participate in providing that love and support.

For the Friendship Ministry to have the greatest community building impact, a number of things are needed.  The Deacons, the Session, and the CHPC Staff need your ideas and your feedback.  Give us a call or send us a note with any suggestions at any time.  We particularly need to know about existing needs, both in our church community and our larger community.  We need and want to know not only how you can help, but how you would like to be helped.  Some of us have more problems receiving concern, compassion and help than giving it, but we need to remember that allowing someone to help us is a great gift.

It is also very important for all of us who have been around for a while to allow and encourage new (and newer) members and younger members to find a role in the Friendship Ministry.  For those of us whose age and wisdom have come to exceed our muscle capacity or attention to detail (!) some help in making a creative transition to seniority may be needed.

Whether by cooking, calling, sending cards, driving or praying for one another, we each can play a part by sharing whatever gifts we have.  We are all partners in Christ’s service, and this is the tie that binds us together and into the Body of Christ.

(The Deacons at Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church are Soni Castleberry, Kay Gilbert, Andrew Kang-Bartlett, Lowell Linder (moderator), Amy Pauw, and Andrea Trautwein (secretary).)

Dear friends at CHPC,

I send a simple note of thanks for all you did to host my ordination service!  Thanks, Patti, for helping so much with invitations and the bulletin.  Thanks, Lucy, for coordinating the reception afterwards.  Thanks, Jane and Debbie, for your wisdom and creativity in worship leadership.  And thanks to all for the beautiful gift—a green, ordinary time stole from Guatemala.  I will wear it with gladness and fond memories of our life in Christ together, with all its richness and diversity.

With blessings in faith, and deep affection,

Peter

The 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be June 21-28 in San Jose, California.  The theme of this GA is Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

The JustPresbys website, created two years ago for the 217th GA, has been revived.  It will give you news and commentary from six cooperating progressive Presbyterian organizations: Covenant Network of Presbyterians, More Light Presbyterians, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, That All May Freely Serve, the Witherspoon Society, and Voices of Sophia.

The home page is http://www.justpresbys.org.  More will be added as GA approaches.  For a schedule of events, both official and unofficial, with links to information on some of those scheduled by the progressive groups, go to http://www.justpresbys.org/events.htm.

Youth News

CHPC Youth are participating in a nation-wide video competition entitled YMI Live, sponsored by the Presbyterian Foundation.  CHPC youth are creating a video based on Micah 6:8: “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (NRSV)

All videos will be posted on www.ymilive.org and YOU will have the chance to vote in support of our youth’s video!  In this election year and in the age of American Idol, this is your chance to vote, CHPC, to support your youth.  Three winning youth groups will receive a $25,000 grant.  Watch your email and listen to announcements for MORE information to come!

Great Youth Team (lyrics by Dawn Pendleton)

Sung to the tune of If I Only Had a Brain

While camping we got stung by some bees

But that didn’t make us freak

‘Cause we are a great youth team

This was after Guatemala

Where the heat, it made us “hollah”

But we are a great youth team

Middle school went back in the mountains

Drove too many miles for countin’

‘Cause we are a great youth team

Then we served the youth Godspell

Where the costumes looked like *&#@

Still we are a great youth team

The youth created with their wits

Used a boat and shot Judas’ kiss

Played Apples to Apples and even Risk

But just wait -- now picture this

We went out for Christmas caroling

A few weeks after Santa Sprinting

‘Cause we are a great youth team

We asked our neighbors for their soup cans

Even though we got some cold hands

‘Cause we are a great youth team

And we got two new team members

Marcus Perry and Laura Kelleher

And they’re great on our youth team

Now Kate and I will have a baby

And that will be a big day

For this, our great youth team

Though we have our busy lives

We work like bees up in a hive

Count on us, we will not hide

And for this -- we’ll always strive

Now this concludes our cutesy song

Let’s everyone run along

You know we are a great youth team

Really now we all do mean it

Let’s clean tables and then beat it

Please help out this great youth team!

Really now we all do mean it

Let’s clean tables and then beat it

Please help out this great youth team!

If you are unable to be present at worship and would like to receive Homebound Communion this month, please call the church office (893-5381).

Pentecost

Join us on May 11, as we celebrate the Day of Pentecost with worship outdoors behind the back building (weather permitting) followed by a potluck picnic.  Plan to wear something red, the liturgical color for Pentecost, signifying the flames that came down upon the church at the first Pentecost.

Interested in becoming a member of CHPC?

There will be a special meeting of session on Sunday, May 4, at 10:00 am in the Gathering Room (just inside the front door of the church) for the purpose of receiving new members into our church.  If you’re interested please talk to Jane, our pastor.  If you’re interested, but just not quite ready to join, please also fee free to talk with Jane (janelw@crescenthill.org or 893-5381).

The Pentecost Offering

The Pentecost Offering is traditionally received on the day of Pentecost (May 11, 2008). It provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised over $7 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God’s family.

Congregations are encouraged to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in their communities.  CHPC plans to use its forty percent to support the Garden Camp program at CHPC (see page 3).

With its sixty percent, General Assembly programs are advocating for children and providing leadership development opportunities for our youth and young adults.

Thanks to Sunday School Teachers

Thank you to our 2007-2008 Sunday School Teachers: Izzy Jones, Allen Bridgman, Julie Leake (resource person), Eva Stimson, Jerry Van Marter, Dave Bush, Molly Casteel, Jane Larsen-Wigger, Stewart Bridgman, Martha Bartlett, Andrew Black, Carlos Lara, Martha Gilliss, Mary Love, Amy Pauw, Kate Husk, Ian Husk, and Marcus Perry (Joyful Noise).

Presbyterian Women

Presbyterian Women from congregations of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery gathered on Saturday, March 29th at the Anchorage Presbyterian Church for its Spring Gathering.  This year’s theme was “Answer the Call…Be A Mentor,” based on 2 Timothy 1:3-7.

It was such fun to visit with long-term friends and to meet new friends.  The youngest participant at the Gathering was 13 years old and the oldest was 90 years young!  Five women from Crescent Hill’s PW attended:  Wanda Abrams, Else Brown, Agnes Marsh, Gayle Trautwein, and Diana Stephen.

Cindy Cushman, staff of Bellewood Presbyterian Homes for Children, gave the keynote address.  Cindy is the Program Manager of Project THRIVE, a mentoring program of Bellewood Presbyterian Homes for Children that serves youth and young adults ages 16-26 who have mental and emotional disabilities.  She spoke about the importance for youth and young adults to have a person in their life to whom they can turn for advice, support, and a loving relationship.  Many of the youth and young adults participating in the Bellewood program have not had such a blessing.  Gathering participants were given an opportunity to reflect with their neighbor about those special “mentors” that we have had in our life.

Many here at Crescent Hill will remember Cindy who was one of our members.  Upon responding to God’s call to the Ministry of the Word and Sacrament, Cindy came under care of Crescent Hill’s Session and the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky, while she studied at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary.   And, we’ll also recall her marriage to Kerry Rice, also a member of Crescent Hill.  Cindy and Kerry are now the parents of six children, four of whom were fostered before their adoption.

Cindy will welcome volunteers interested in serving as a Bellewood mentor.  If you are interested, contact Cindy directly at:  ccushman@bellewood.org

The offering received at the Gathering was donated to Bellewood Presbyterian Home.

After the morning program was completed, Presbyterian Women enjoyed lunch and celebrated the 20th birthday of the Presbyterian Women’s organization—complete with party hats, noisemakers, and cupcakes.  Many asked, “Why 20 years, when we’ve been part of Presbyterian Women for many more years than that?”  Remember, it’s been 20 years since the reunion of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and the Presbyterian Church U.S.  Several years following the reunion of the denominations, a new organization for Presbyterian Women came into being.  Our own, Agnes Marsh, was recognized for her leadership during that period of reunion and reorganization.

(CHPC Presbyterian Women meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:00 am September through June in various locations.  For more information, contact Diana Stephen at 896-6075.)
