Many of us remember Gena Chilton as the “candy lady.” As the
children of Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church left for Joyful
Noise, they first stopped to see Miss Gena who always had red
Life Saver candy to give them. Gena’s love for children was
not limited to Crescent Hill. During her life as a teacher
and school principal, she always provided for children. Shoes
and peanut butter were often the “life savers” offered by Gena
when she knew that a child was in need.
To honor her memory, Crescent Hill’s Presbyterian Women’s
Circle is “planting” Gena’s Tree in the gathering room in the
rear of the sanctuary. Each season you will be invited to
laden the tree with specific offerings for children. Everyone
is invited to participate, especially our children and youth.
During the summer, we look forward to the new school year and
encourage you to provide “life savers” in the form of back
packs, school supplies, and uniforms for the children of
United Crescent Hill Ministries. You will find a basket at
the bottom of the tree and colorful hangers on the tree where
you may place the items. We will see that they are delivered
to UCHM.
During autumn and winter, we encourage you to provide “life
savers” in the form of hats, mittens, and scarves. Yarn is
available at the foot of the tree if you wish to use it. You
may hang items on the tree or put them in a basket at the
bottom of the tree. We will see that they are delivered to
UCHM.
We look forward to your participation so that the tree may
bear much fruit so that the children at United Crescent Hill
Ministries and the children at the Presbyterian Community
Center might live life abundantly.
